After a recent $80,000+ renovation, the fire brought it to the ground. Sadly, the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 caused great damage to the Crosby Opera House where Kimball’s store resided. Kimball was producing his own reed organs and built a facility to support the largest organ manufacturing operation in the world at the time. Today, Schafer and Sons are negotiating with several European manufacturers to produce a new line of Schaffer and Sons pianos.Founded originally in 1857 by William Wallace Kimball, the Kimball Piano Company got its start as a piano dealer, selling popular brands of the time as well as affordable reed organs. Parts are manufactured overseas, which are gathered together and assembled in China. From 1990 until 2005 Young Chang has manufactured Schafer and Sons pianos.
The two company’s joint venture lasted until 1989. In 1974, Samick Pianos forged a partnership with Schafer and Sons. These include the Aeolian, Schimmel, Story and Clark, Kimball, Wurlitzer, and other piano manufacturing companies. Many other well known piano manufacturers produced pianos from Schafer and Sons. In the 1970’s they produced the Schafer and Sons “Classic” Console Piano. In the 1960’s Schafer and Sons joined a partnership with Kohler and Campbell Pianos. The company initially produced 100 pianos, manufactured by the Currier Piano Company. The business was established by Vern Schafer in 1955 in Colton, California. The Schafer & Sons company is a family organiztion dedicated to music and fine musical instruments. Includes free local delivery, warranty and matching bench.
